These are possible meanings to ask about, not a claim that Chester uses a fixed menu of disposition labels.
A move to the South Carolina Department of Corrections, another county jail, the U.S. Marshals Service, ICE, or another lawful custodian is a transfer. Legal custody continues. Ask for both “release type” and “destination custodian” because a Release Date in the online grid may only close the Chester booking. A record that disappears from the roster can also reflect a correction or system issue.

- Save ArrestNo, Jacket, Book Date, charge, and court identifiers before the row changes.
- If Release Date appears, call the Detention Center and cite the displayed booking numbers.
- Ask whether the booking ended in community release or transfer, plus the actual date, time, disposition, authority, and destination.
- Request the underlying booking and release entry when telephone disclosure is limited or the row is missing.

No official source states a guaranteed release time, public exit door, waiting point, weekend rule, or property-return procedure. Call for current instructions rather than assuming them.
Request Detention Center Records
South Carolina Code section 30-4-30(D)(3) requires documents identifying people confined in a jail during the preceding three months to be available for inspection and copying during operating hours, unless another law exempts information. A person appearing during the posted hours can ask to inspect the identifying confinement document and any readily available release entry. This right does not require Chester to keep the booking visible online for three months.

A court bond order can prove that release was authorized under stated conditions. It may not show when the jail completed processing. Likewise, “time served” should be checked against the sentencing order. The release entry supplies the physical-custody endpoint while the court docket explains the legal case.
Detention Center Bond Processing
Chester County Bond Court shares the Dawson Drive complex and holds hearings at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. seven days a week. The Magistrate Court page supplies the official schedule and local bond principles. A hearing time does not equal a release time.
After a court order, the jail may still need to receive and verify the order, confirm payment or conditions, check other holds, and process the person. “Bonded out” means release under court-set conditions while the case continues. About Chester Detention Center
The facility holds pretrial adults, people awaiting bond or court action, qualifying local sentences, and people awaiting transfer. The official directories reviewed did not identify Chester, Fort Lawn, or Great Falls police stations as separate long-term adult detention facilities. Those departments may arrest or briefly hold a person, but the county Detention Center is the local jail resource when a county booking occurred.
Sheriff Max Dorsey supplied the processing and ordinary population figures to County Council. They are an annual operational statement, not a live count of people currently held or a count of unique releases. He later described continuous operation since 1970, three renovations, and aging structural and building-system concerns while the county discussed a future integrated complex.
Detention Center History and Records
The jail's age helps explain why its public interface and physical process may differ from a newer regional facility. A 2021 assessment estimated about $3.73 million in detention renovation work, and later payment records document some plumbing and water-heater capital work. The assessment does not prove that all proposed work was completed. The 2026 workshop discussion does not prove a new jail has opened.
